Oct 6 Assignment

1. The first main claim is that most of the money made by for-profit schools is through Pell Grants and subsidized student loans. pg 53
  • “University of Phoenix will make $1 billion from Pell Grants and $4 billion in federal loans” pg 53
    The second main claim is that a large and growing number of graduates from for-profit colleges are having trouble paying off those loans. pg 53
  • “The Obama administration has proposed cutting off federal aid to for-profits that saddle students with unmanageable debt” pg 53
     The third main claim is that for-profit colleges cost a lot more than public colleges and universities. pg 54
  • “The for-profit Corinthian Colleges estimated in official documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that more than half the loans it makes to its students will go bad” pg 54

2. For-profits exist to serve the students that public and private nonprofit institutions leave out and also make their money off of them. pg 54

   Voids left by nonprofit institutions are filled by for-profit schools. pg 55

   Traditional institutions have pointed themselves to regional accreditation. Allows colleges to regulate their own lecturing skills. pg 55
   
3. A main claim that I would like to investigate is that why do for-profit colleges need to charge so much for tuition into their schools, when mostly providing services to lower income students.
